BinckBank Tour #7: Valgren secures GC top-10

Aug 18, 2019

Michael Valgren capped off a strong performance at the BinckBank Tour with seventh on the final stage that finished at the Geraardsbergen.

The stage was won by Oliver Naesen (AG2R) who shaded Greg van Avermaet (CCC) on the line with Laurens de Plus (Jumbo-Visma) in third, four seconds adrift. That was enough for de Plus to win the race overall.

Valgren was part of the chasing group that fractured in the frantic closing stages with the GC battle in full cry, 26 seconds behind the winner and in the process his second top-10 stage finish of the race.

That result saw him secure 10th spot on the general classification.

It was also a strong week for Reinardt Janse van Rensburg who was 20th on the final stage and saw him finish 17th on GC.

Those two performances were supplemented by some excellent support from the rest of the squad including Lars Bak, Mark Renshaw, Ryan Gibbons and Julien Vermote. While Rasmus Tiller was forced to bow out earlier after taking a knock to the knee in a crash in the second stage.

“It was a good solid week and I’m really happy with how we worked together as a team. When Reinie and I were up there in the GC we really got it all together and worked towards a goal. It was also really good to have Mark here, he kind of put the hammer down (for us) so we had a goal to work towards.

“We managed to stay in the top-10 with me which in the end is a good result. Of course you always want more but I think when you see the guys in front of me, well they are all really good riders. Perhaps with a few more seconds here and there I could have been sixth or seventh but those are small margins and doesn’t change that much when you are targeting a win. From a personal point of view I’m really happy to be back up there in the mix again, to be back where I think I belong among some of the best guys in the bunch.” – Michael Valgren
