Giro d’Italia #11: Gibbons & Nizzolo place 7th & 8th

May 22, 2019

Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) sprinted to the stage 11 victory at the Giro d’Italia, beating Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) and Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) to the line in Novi Ligure respectively.

It was yet another long flat stage at the Giro d’Italia, as the peloton took on 221km today. With a general headwind for the most of the day too, it was inevitable that a bunch sprint would decide the stage.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka had planned today’s sprint for Giacomo Nizzolo, and the team rallied around our sprinter for the finale. Coming into Novi Ligure, it was again another technical final few kilometers but Mark Renshaw had things under control, leading the peloton into the last kilometer.

As the sprint opened up, Ryan Gibbons found himself a few positions ahead of Nizzolo. Hesitant to commit to the sprint without his Italian teammate on his wheel, it soon became too late for Gibbons to accelerate into a top placing. Nizzolo came from a long way back to finish alongside the South Africa, as thew finished 7th and 8th respectively.

“The team was really good right up until the final moments of today’s stage. A slight mix up with Nizzolo not being on Gibbons wheel in the deep final caused some confusion for our guys. As this all only happened inside the last kilometer, there obviously wasn’t much time for a plan B to be implemented. So in the end, we ended up with two okay results but not that one great result we hoped for.” Alex Sans Vega, Sport Director.
